Genre Decision

We carefully researched and considered the thriller, horror, and drama genres and we've come to a decision.

We decided not to go with thrillers because they had a really slow build-up and we just didn't have enough time to get our story across. Thrillers also used a lot of the handheld camera angles as if someone was recording themselves. This didn't fit into our story because they are mostly used in chase scenes, and there is nothing like this in our storyline. Overall, thrillers would not work because they are too slow-paced, and we wanted something that would drive fear in the beginning and continue all throughout the movie.

We decided not to go with drama because after researching it, we realized that it didn't fit with our pitch at all. The conventions differ too much from the story idea that we pitched. Yes, we could possibly use some elements of drama in our opening scene but overall it wouldn't be right to categorize it as such. Changing our story to be more dramatic just wouldn't be as exciting. One element of a drama film is the voiceover aspect. Usually, there is a voiceover introducing the characters and telling us what is going on in their heads. In our opening scene, we wouldn't have time to do this and it would be very poorly done if we rushed it.

Ultimately, we decided on the horror genre. We feel it aligns with our pitch. The horror genre aims to scare the audience by feeding on their worst fears and giving them an adrenaline rush. We like the variety of angles that this genre provided. It allows us to do more with our opening scene despite the limited time and allows us to be more creative. Another reason we chose this genre is that it allows the most scare intensity in the opening scene. Due to the limited time, we wanted something that would make our storyline obvious and wouldn't take half of the movie to figure out.
